Introduction
The Department of Applied Language Studies has been running degree programmes in Translating and Interpreting since 1964. It is an active member of International Permanent Conference of University Institutes of Translators and Interpreters (CIUTI)
At present, the Department is part of the Integrated Arts Faculty of the University of Leuven. As such it provides a BA in Applied Language Studies and four MA programmes: Master in Translation, Master in Interpreting, Master in Journalism and Master in Multilingual Business Communication.
The BA in Applied Language Studies comprises in-depth training in Dutch and two foreign languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian or Arabic and Flemish Sign Language). Students acquire linguistic and cultural insight in and through the languages of their choice and apply and build on this in skills-focused classes (reading and writing, listening and speaking) to achieve COE C1 levels for their foreign languages.
The MA in Translation provides a thorough academic grounding in translation studies and in-depth practice in translation work, using advanced technological support and applications. The department provides postgraduate opportunities through its participation in an international MA in specialized translation.
The MA in Interpreting provides training for a career in liaison interpreting. It further provides a thorough study of interpreting, discourse analysis and intercultural communication. It also prepares students for the market in community interpreting and business environments. The department offers a postgraduate degree in conference interpreting, recognised by the official European institutions.
The MA in Journalism prepares students for a career in the written and spoken press, focusing on the specialized linguistic skills involved. It provides a thorough grounding in communication sciences, media studies and discourse analysis.
Within the MA in Multilingual Business Communication students are trained to analyse the communication needs of a company, to develop a communication strategy and to implement that strategy. The programme builds on insights from communication science, discourse analysis, and intercultural communication and provides highly specialized training in writing and speaking skills.
In addition to these programmes, the Department offers a range of postgraduate opportunities for professional translators and interpreters. These range from additional language courses (Portuguese, Polish, New Greek, Moroccan Arabic, Turkish, Dutch for foreigners), to courses in court interpreting, translation technology and specialized seminars in literary translation.
