Accommodation
In Antwerp many individuals let rooms, bedsits and flats. Lessius Antwerp does not have halls of residence, but the school does help exchange students to find a place. Most of them take over the rooms of Lessius exchange students who are abroad themselves. As a rule, there are few accommodation problems in Antwerp.
All student rooms are rented by the month, for a few months. The rent should be paid on the first day of the month. A deposit of 1, 2 or sometimes 3 months must be paid to the owners upon arrival.
Student rooms tend to be single rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Students must bring their own linen (sometimes also blankets or a sleeping bag). Extra kitchen utensils may be bought locally and cheaply in second-hand shops, on markets or in small retail chains such as 'Krak', 'Wibra' or 'Stock 2002'. Student rooms cost around € 250 depending on the facilities, location etc. Bedsits cost from € 350 a month.
It is also advisable to sign the 'huurstaat' document. This describes the state of your rented room at the beginning of your rental period. This form has legal status in case of dispute.
If you have any questions regarding accommodation, please contact Inge Van Abbenyen, of STIP Lessius Antwerpen, of the host institution (before June 30th for those coming over in the first semester or the entire year and before November 30th for those arriving in the second semester).
Temporary Lodgings
Some exchange students come to Antwerp ahead of their stay to look for a good room. In that case, temporary lodgings can be found in youth hostels such as:
Kotweb
The Antwerp educational institutions have developed a common accommodation service called KOTWEB ('Digsweb'). Student lodgings meeting certain requirements are registered on this site. Stuvo, an npo dealing with various student facilities, takes part in KOTWEB. Get a daily update on student accommodation on offer via the internet. Just take your pick as to location, price, facilities. This database gives you very useful information. The website also contains a list of excellent rental tips and a model contract (with a French and English translation of the latter). Contact Inge Van Abbenyen to receive a log on password. She will gladly offer extra information in case of communication problems between landlord and student.
Passwords for 2011 - 2012 will be available as of 15 June 2011.
